PS 106, the Parkchester School has had it's fair share of being put on the back burner, finally the school will indeed get a building to replace the old moldy portables that once stood behind the schools main building.
The request for a stand alone building was made three years ago. The most memorable request came from the parent leadership in 1999. The PA President was Ms. C. Seda. Parents rallied and signed a magnitude of petitions, most of those petitions were hand delivered to every politician at the time and to the Chancellors office as well. That delivery was made possible by Ms. Al-Mckay, the parents meant business. Word was given to the PS 106 school that they would indeed get their wish, but instead got 5 TCU's (Transportable Classroon Units). The Parkchester school has been very patient and now it has paid off. The portable became infested with mold (which was discovered by the parents association executive board) and were shut down only after the parents fought against the DOE marking them as safe. With the strong parent leadership and parent support, the then PA President Ms. McKay had requested the assistance of the NAACP Parkchester Branch's President Ms. Roberts and her team to help rally against the DOE to stop the injustice being committed against the children. With the support of the parents and the NAACP and having a strong parent leader, the voices were heard. PS 106 is finally getting what they have needed for so long and are apart of The Capital Plan regarding Capacity (large scale construction jobs to create additional seating). Keep your eyes open.
