Verizon gets FiOS TV / high-speed internet into Bronx's Parkchester complex

Verizon%20FiOS%20installers%20in%20Parkchester
And so it begins. It appears that the FCC's efforts to facilitate programming competition for apartments last year have been successful, with Verizon inking its second contract with a New York-based complex this month. This time, the agreement is with Parkchester, the largest privately owned condominium complex in the US. The deal will bring Verizon's FiOS TV and high-speed internet to residents of Parkchester in the Bronx, giving some 12,271 apartments in 171 buildings access to a fiber-based alternative. As you could likely guess, this is the provider's largest agreement ever in the urban multiple-dwelling-unit market, and while a specific date wasn't mentioned, everything should go live before the end of 2008.

Verizon FiOS is not yet available in Parkchester, Bronx, New York and will not be available to the entire Parkchester, Bronx, New York area, just to Parkchester condominiums.

Verizon FiOS is scheduled to be available to Parkchester condominium residents by the end of 2008.  At that time, Verizon FiOS installation orders for Parkchester condominium residents should begin and order taking will be available here on THE PARKCHESTER INFORMATION NETWORK for all Parkchester condominium residents.

Get information on Verizon FiOS and place your order for DirecTV and Dish Network services in Parkchester at http://www.parkchesterinfo.com/satellitetelevisionservices/

To clarify on the above post, Verizon FiOS will be available to all residents in the Parkchester complex, both residents who rent an apartment in the Parkchester complex and residents who own a condominium in the Parkchester complex will be able to order Verizon FiOS.

People who live in Parkchester, Bronx, New York but not in the Parkchester complex will not be able to order Verizon FiOS.

What happened was Verizon FiOS made a direct agreement with the Parkchester complex management team to bring Verizon FiOS services directly into the Parkchester complex buildings.  Again, anyone who lives in the apartments and condominiums that make up the Parkchester complex will have Verizon FiOS.

The word Parkchester has two definitions:
1.  Parkchester - an area in the Bronx, New York
2.  Parkchester - an apartment and condominium complex in the Bronx, New York, Parkchester area.

I hope I have cleared this up for some folks.

hey, Darkstarr128, why would you consider this news a "shocker."

Agreed: this is good news, but calling this a shocker is overly dramatic.

only because there are many parts of the city w/o Fios availability and didn't expect this part of the Bronx to get it before many others.

Hello Parkchesterites,

Great News, Verizon FiOS is now available to some of the buildings in the Parkchester Apartment and Condominium complex.  You will have to check your building's address to see if you can order.

Check Your Address and place your FiOS order

My buddy Phil mentioned this to me a few days ago.

Gonna find out if my building already has it. And then I'm going to do a little shopping and comparing before I order.

How do you all think Verizon Fios will compare to other brands offering basically the same service?

That info would be helpful to many here in Parkchester.

Sorry to be the one to put a damper in everyone's happiness about Fios, but it seems that the technicians who installed, forgot to connect the buildings to the main box each building has.   I at least know it was for most of the buildings.  The tech guy apologized for me wasting my time and tells me technicians won't be able to complete their half-ass job until a week or two later.  So guys it looks like we'll be staying with "freezing-up" cablevision and "garbage" directv a little longer Ouch

Ugh-- I'm moving in this weekend (Parkchester North) and was hoping to have FiOS service hooked up.  What do you guys think?  Should I wait for it, or get Optimum Online instead?  Not sure what the price/service/speed difference will be...

ParkchesterSouth just seems to be the better side to live on.

I wonder what's wrong with management on the North side. You would think by now they would step up their game.

It seems they don't mind - in the least - lagging behind Parkchester South's management team as far as performance.

I have to admit, sometimes I think this is all planned. That one side has to be better and one worse.

Politics? Business agendas? Perhaps some type of redlining in Parkchester Housing. Something's going on.

sh** Just doesn't seem kosher.

Still, I'm glad to be living in Parkchester South.

Even friends of mine notice the big difference my where i live on the south, to where the  North is.  The neighborhood just starts to look nasty as you walk into the North territory, it really should not be that way

I noticed that we're getting Verizon Fios to our neighborhood but yet it's not available?  Yet it says it would be available by the end of 2008....I just want to know when it will be available to us

" ...I just want to know when it will be available to us."

Verizon fios ordering page (found here http://www.parkchesterinfo.com/satellitetelevisionservices/verizoncom_featured_bundle1.asp

used to have a link on the upper right-hand side that read "Check Availability." You would click-on this link to find out when Verizon Fios would be available in your building.

All you had to do was simply provide your location (In this case “Parkchester”) or your Verizon home number (if you had this) .

It seems for some reason this "Check Availability" link was removed.

Or perhaps it's somewhere else on the ordering form?

Help, please!

has anyone installed Verizon FiOS? What has your experience been like with it? How long did the installation take? What time did the technician arrive?

I'm having FiOS installed next week. Any feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alberto

I made the switch from Cablevision to Verizon Fios, my suggestion, keep Cablevision.  Verizon Fios is nothing special. The Verizon tech spent all day, 10AM till about 5PM (not an exageration) installing Fios which includes him attaching two boxes permanently to the wall, one small, one quite large (10"X10"X5").  I do not use phone service just TV and Internet.  The service is not anything noticably different from Cablevision.  Plus since I was not home, my wife was, the tech installed tons of useless Verizon software on my computer.  For the two services I'm now paying $94/ month which is only for the first year, there are a lot of extra fees that they don't tell you about when joining.  I got one month of Free Premium Stations, HBO etc and 6 months of free DVR, which is pretty nice.

My advice, keep Cablevision, just call them and say you are considering changing, Verizon is offering you all this, what can you offer me to stay a loyal customer?  You might like what they say.

Thanks BroncCav for your response. I had FiOS installed this week. I signed up for the ExtremeHD

package and internet, I did not sign up for the phone either.

So here's a rundown on how the whole experience was:

1) I made the appointment for the installation by following parkchesterinfo's link. I was only given

an option for an all day appointment. I called Verizon a few days before the appointment and asked

that they have the technician at my house between 8 AM and 12 noon. He arrived at about 10 AM to

start the installation.

2) About a week before the installation I called Cablevision to let them know that I was

disconnecting the service. They offered me several discounts and upgrades to try and keep me with

them:
a) They offered to keep me at the introductory triple play offer price of $99 for all 3 services for

an additional TWO years.
b) They upgraded my internet service from the normal Optimum Online to their boost service. It's

supposed to be something like 20mbps/5mbps.
-I tested my connection at www.speakeasy.net and it actually peaked at 8mbps/2mbps. Those are pretty

good speeds, and it was faster than their normal service.
c) They offered to keep my DVR service for free
d) Lastly, cablevision asks that you provide them with the order confirmation number that FiOS

provides you when you sign up for their service. They then go ahead and check Verizon's site to

confirm that you indeed are planning to switch providers.

In the end, my montly price turned out to be about $10 or $15 cheaper.

3) Those were pretty respectable offers, and anyone who doesn't want to go through the hassle of

switching can probably take advantage of it and not switch at all. I'm a tech person and just decided

that I wanted to try FiOS out. There were several things I didn't like about cablevision, for

example, pixalation of the HD channels, slow response when navigating through the menus of the set

top boxes. I've had time warner cable and their boxes operate a lot quicker.

4) So on the day of installation the tech arrived at about 10 am and was done by 2:30 PM. He would've

finished about a 1/2 hour earlier had he not run out of staples for his staple gun. He had to get

some from one of his co-workers. The tech was very knowledgable and new what he was doing. Like

BroncCav said, they do install a rather large box in your apartment, and had I not been monitoring

the tech, he would installed a load of useless Verizon software on my PC. Well useless software for

me because it installs tools and utilities that I don't need, but may be usefull for someone who is

not computer savy.

5) So how does FiOS compare to cablevision? The set top boxes' response time is lightning fast,

picture is crisp and I have not noticed any pixalation on the HD channels. When you change channels

they load almost immediately. I tested their internet connection at speakeasy.net and it peaked at

about 19mbps/5mbps (Gee look at that, I'm actually getting what I paid for). About the only thing that I will miss from cablevision is not having NY1.

6) The only thing left is to wait until I get my first bill from Verizon. They are known for adding a lot of hidden charges and taxes, but those are mainly for their phone service. I'm expecting that the taxes on their TV service should be similar to cablevision. As for the internet, from my understanding there are no taxes for it no matter which provider you have. However im sure that is soon to change as I know there is legislation in congress to implement an internet tax.

I hope this review was helpful. Im sure there are things I missed, feel free to ask any questions if you are considering FiOS.

-Alberto

Wo! I don't know how I stumbled on this page but I thank all you guys for making me smile with your coments.  A great way to start the early morning.  I  reside on the South Side of Parkchester and have been living on that side for years.  My understanding in the past was that the North side has more owners and it goes far back with the split you have to do researxh.  Metropolitan life owned it and Leona Hemsley owned part of it if I remember correctly.  But anyway I have FIOS and I love it I gave cable the boot.  You will definetely know you are getting it when you see Verizon truck constanly in your area.  The North side in my personal opinion Board are cheap they don't like to invest much in the positiveness of making their area better.  It a major difference appearance wise, security wise and more.  I am sure the south has issues to too but not as much and again this is my personally opinion.  Sorry I thought I was writing in my journal lol.  You can register on verizon.com and you can also call 718 890-0687 the FIOS department.  I am paying about $120 a month and that with the Media DVR 4 rooms and 25/15 Mbps and Unlimited call nationwide and Canada I can't complain and If you can get it you should jump on it before the 15th of August to get your free mini Compaq notebook or Ultra Flip Camcorder.  Hope that this information is helpful...

Can some one explain how Fios is installed here in Parkchester? Where they run the wires, and install the ONT box? Do they use the existing Cablevision wiring and leave the current phone wiring in place in case someone would want to have a regular phone line? I have heard mixed review and hassles about installation, billing and service that is seems almost better to stay with Cablevision for now. Verizon doesn't have service centers to return, or exchange equipment like CV and their customer service over the phone needs a lot of work.

I installed DSL and was having problem with the service upon set up due to a box in the linen closet blocking the signal. Called more than 3 times to all parts of the globe just to get some one to my house(GOTTA LOVE THAT OUTSOURCING >:/). Verizon doesnt have local call centers anymore. Is it worth the installation head ache as well?
